The History of Recipes and Serving Size.

Let’s take a look at the historical aspect of creating recipes for a bit.

The history of writing recipes in larger quantities, is closely tied to the evolution of culinary practices and the needs of both home cooks and professional chefs.

While there isn't a single definitive historical account of when this practice began, we can trace its development through various periods and cultural contexts.

In ancient civilizations, such as Egypt, Greece, and Rome, culinary practices were often centered around the preparation of meals for larger groups of people. Recipes were typically written for the benefit of cooks in royal kitchens, temples, or wealthy households, where food had to be prepared in bulk to feed many individuals. These early recipes were often recorded on papyrus or clay tablets.

During the Middle Ages in Europe, recipes were typically written in manuscript form and primarily targeted at the elite and noble households. Cooks in castles and monasteries had to prepare meals for a significant number of people, so recipes were adjusted to larger quantities. These recipes often relied on vague measurements, and proportions were not always specified.

The Renaissance period brought about advancements in culinary arts and the dissemination of knowledge. Cookbooks became more widely available, and recipes began to include more precise measurements.

With the advent of industrialization in the 19th century, culinary practices changed.

The need to feed large numbers of workers in factories and institutions led to the development of standardized recipes for institutional cooking. These recipes often specified quantities in terms of servings, making it easier to plan and execute meals on a large scale.

In the 20th century, the publication of cookbooks for the general public became widespread. These cookbooks included recipes designed for family meals, and specifying quantities for 4, 6, or 8 servings became a common practice. The goal was to make cooking more accessible to home cooks and help them prepare meals for their households.

In the digital age, the availability of recipe websites and apps has made it even easier for people to find and follow recipes for various serving sizes. Many websites and apps allow users to adjust serving sizes to their specific needs, which is particularly helpful for smaller households and individuals.

From ancient civilizations to the modern digital era, the desire to prepare meals for larger groups and the development of culinary knowledge have shaped the way recipes are written for different serving sizes.
